At 28 years old, Actress Raven-Symoné Christina Pearman, known simply as Raven-Symoné or Raven, has a strong sense of who she is and isn’t, she told Oprah Winfrey that she does not want to be labeled “gay” or “African-American.”
The 28-year-old Raven-Symoné, who is best known for her roles on NBC’s The Cosby Show and Disney Channel’s That’s So Raven, made her comments during an appearance on cabler OWN’s Where Are They Now?
Winfrey asked Raven-Symoné about a tweet she sent last year cheering the start of gay marriage laws in Minnesota and Rhode Island.
“I can finally get married! Yay government! So proud of you,” she messaged.
“Was that your way of coming out, saying you’re gay?” Winfrey asked.
“That was my way of saying I’m proud of the country,” she answered. “But, I will say that I’m in an amazing, happy relationship with my partner. A woman.”
Raven-Symoné said she knew about her sexuality at 12: “I was looking at everything.”
“So you don’t want to be labeled gay?” Winfrey asked.
“I don’t want to be labeled gay. I want to be labeled a human who loves humans. I’m tired of being labeled. I’m an American. I’m not an African-American. I’m an American,” she added. I don’t know how far more roots go in Africa but I know they are in Louisiana and that makes me an American. I’m colorless.
